Video card doesn't work with the monitor..?

went upgrade computer adding in proccesor , motherboard , ram , gigabyte video card, when connect monitor it, computer turns on, monitor stays black.
called guy made me...he said u should make monitor resolotion 800x600
donnu how...
working jus fine in store
monitor not accept or something?
