on january 18, 1911 became first pilot land on stationary ship. took off tanforan racetrack , landed on similar temporary structure on aft of uss pennsylvania anchored @ san francisco waterfront — improvised braking system of sandbags , ropes led directly arrestor hook , wires described above. aircraft turned around , able take off again. commander charles samson, rn, became first airman take off moving warship on may 2, 1912. took off in short s27 battleship hms hibernia while steamed @ 10.5 knots (19 km/h) during royal fleet review @ weymouth.
