Anyone had problems with a Mazda Protege 5 engine?

have mazda protege 5 - 2002 model. has been great, reliable car. no problems. aside routine maintenance has never been in shop! other day husband driving on highway , air conditioner stopped blowing cold air, after began feel though losing power. pulled on , had towed mechanic (who trust , have patronized years , through many cars!) told engine , radiator burned up. there no warning signs. has experienced similar?
