Laptop backlight dead. External monitor?

i'm on ancient t20 thinkpad, had been having screen problems ages (the screen flicker , give me trouble until lifted , closed laptop bunch of times). finally, died. speak, i'm pathetically holding flashlight in mouth view monitor.

seeing have many batteries, need solution. have monitor old desktop i've attatched laptop (fits fine). plugged in, nothing displaying. should reboot , see if anything? appreciated!!
