Printer Offline??

hp deskjet d4160 (part of bundle bought last spring) hooked usb cable computer...vista home premium.....keeps telling me printer offline. why? how can piece junk print? prints, doesn't.....mostly doesn't several weeks.

have uninstalled , reinstalled puppy & still nothing. :[
