Subaru - Starting problem?

1996 subaru legacy has intermittent starting problem. when warm outside (or if engine has been running 5 mins prior) engine won't fire up. starter going 'grrr grrr grrr grrr' , battery light remains illuminated. fires after couple of cranks , flooring of gas pedal. battery tested whenever happens tech says fine, if not battery go now? should spark plugs checked?
