How can I fix this problem with car batter?

problem has been fixed. part connected starter touching screw below it. guess ignition or something, anyways when + - connected sent power both parts causing start , causing terminals on battery spark , smoke. adjusted cable making sure nothing touching , fine. it's strange how overlooked that. responded answer.

i changed car battery , when connect positive , negative wires car turns on. key not in ignition. have '01 pontiac grand prix. can wrong?
