How are bronze sculptures made?

create full-sized model of sculpture clay. use oil-based plasticine small sculptures , sculptures need less time complete. large models require water-based clay.

2 create mold using model. plaster , flexible gel more popular materials used process. once applied model, these materials copy impressions , harden form mold.

3 use mold create plaster master. plaster master refined further improve quality of sculpture. in earlier days, creating plaster master way of preserving yet unproduced sculpture until there enough money pay bronze casting.

4 cast wax production mold. involves pouring liquid wax mold , swishing around until thick coating of wax lines walls of mold.

5 remove hollow wax, "chase" rubbing out marks mold pieces came together. add wax sprues mold. these sprues direct flow of liquid metal , vents added allow escape of gases needed.

6 dip wax mold liquid silica , stucco. let mold dry. repeat process until there half inch of coating on mold.

7 place wax mold in kiln harden coatings , melt wax. cool shell remains. reheat , place in tub of sand.

8 fill new mold molten bronze build sculpture. allow bronze cool , hammer or sand blast shell remove it.

9 "chase" bronze remove telltale signs of casting.

10 finish sculpture. once have completed steps required build sculpture, need treat surface polishing , applying corrosive materials. these corrosive materials form patina on surface black, green, white or brown
