Home Theater Advice?

have 42" pany plasma standard i/o including (1) hdmi. have direct tv hd receiver. want add home theater system. nothing fancy, 1 of better "home theater in box" me. question is, connections need make sure home theater has? , "flow" of direct tv signal? hd box receiver tv? if aren't losing benefit of hdmi receiver tv since connection hdtv box receiver component? info great!
