Photography, what's a good camera?

no preference on zoom. (optical...digital..)

i'm beginner when comes understanding techniques photography, love still-life, portraits, etc.

i've been taking pictures on fujifilm digital camera, 1 of little dinky cameras people carry around purposes, , i'd take step , real camera.

i'm looking camera good, around max price range of $200. i'm willing go alittle bit higher. nothing on $250.

i'm in canada btw.

suggestions , reviews please. :d
