don't believe photography deliberately used propaganda, @ least not in sort of way we'd recognise propaganda today. photography did bring brutality , waste of war home ordinary people in way no other medium able do. prior soldiers had seen horrors of battle , rows of dead men lying fell , showing agonies of last moments. in sense though did act bit propaganda because stoked growing feeling in north war waste of life , served huge boost peace movement. particularly true during grant's 1864 campaign, reported casualty numbers alone caused uproar in north, effect of photographs showing how , thousands of men died electric. evidence of massive effect photographs of war had on ordinary people vast numbers of photographic plates destroyed after war. nobody wanted reminded of they'd seen.

how photography used in civil war , how changed image of war world , maybe well.
