Reliable fuel efficient commuting car for a college student at low price?

i'm 19 , commute home, work 5-6 days week, , school class 2 -4 days week, need 4-6 fill ups per paycheck , drive 1998 chevy blazer got high school graduation. put in 2k month in miles on car , $480 per month in gas, , make $700 month part time job. have had replace part of transmission, heat core, , (not big) break pads, tires, , window on car. better me try , trade in , civic/corolla/protoge/ of other foreign cars when put 20k miles on car after having 14 months? cars recommended replacing blazer, other 3rd gear , heatercore going out, , part rattles in auto-tensioner makes engine loud when ac on, has been great first car.
