How to work a photography career into my life?

awhile thought wanted go child development or childhood education because absolutely love children. however, have begun enjoy photography, i'm afraid pursuing career in leave me on streets, there competition (especially since live in nyc) , lot of freelance. if had resources, major in both photography , child development, don't have money , quite frankly don't want in school life. photojournalism particularly interests me (i don't posed images much, i'd rather capture moment). successful in photojournalism, have major in it, or take few classes here , there? i'm torn!
