Any ideas on what may be wrong with my Subaru?

have 1999 subaru legacy outback awd (2.5 l) 143k on it. replaced battery, , noticing tings concern us. none of these happened before put in new battery. engine seems idling high, when started. when coming complete stop, stops, feels brakes overpowered engine little, , drifts forward. when press brake harder (all way floor) stops - momentary, quite frightening. replaced brake pads excellent ones 3 months ago, , have had no other problems in regard. checked brake fluid - no problems there. suggestions?
