after ww 1, there artistic revolution, , spawned bunch of new , different movements:
1. dadaism. began in switzerland moved berlin, nyc, paris, etc. "anti-art" movement. visual arts, theater, graphic design, , literature (mostly poetry, art manifestoes, , art theory.) lot of art 'performed.' anti-war. destruction. dadaists wanted "kill art." 1 dadaist said, "we had lost confidence in our culture. had demolished." read "the dada manifesto" more views (link below). many dada artists used number of genres in 1 piece of art , used humor and/or shock value. still done today.
2. surrealism. grew out of dadaism. dadaists, rejected western culture. off-the-wall. salvador dali famous surrealist.
3. de stijl movement, dutch movement. very, modern--the real basis modern art , architecture.
4. american modernism.
5. american regionalism. depicted "typical" american life. umbrella term rural american regionalism , social realism.
