if stick cea-compliant brands because have been tested , produce or exceed advertised rms wattage minimum distortion , subs can handle rated rms wattage (distortion main cause of speaker damage on time)

important know "real" rms wattage can match amps , subs because if send power sub, risk damaging it. cone of speaker , mechanical parts make move may break under stress. surprisingly, little power can damage subwoofer — in fact, it's more common damage caused overpowering.
when volume turned , amp doesn't have enough power, signal becomes distorted, or "clipped." distorted signal can cause parts of speaker overheat, warp , melt. not good!
don't have match speaker , amp wattages exactly. amp higher output speaker's rating won't damage speaker — turn amp down bit if hear distortion sub , don't run speaker @ extremely loud volumes lengthy periods. likewise, you'll ok lower powered amp if keep volume down , don't feed distorted signal sub
