Anyone recommend a good bike for commuting?

went through myself. part of question "probability of theft"? if odds bike may beat up, sit in sun, rained on, etc., buy decent quality bike (trek, specialized, etc.) used , little beat up. purchased specialized hardrock classic $100, threw on rack, bags, , fenders $80. if gets stolen i'll irritated, not heartbroken. if have safe , secure place bike, @ distance, spend little more on lighter frame (aluminum) compact crank or triple. if have shower anyway @ work, clipless pedals give more power , make more efficient. opted standard platform pedals 3 miles away , can ride in street clothes (business casual) long keep pace moderate. luck.

roughly ~20 miles, roads, highway, city. moderately hilly.
