My Volkswagen Cabrio is having issues....PLEASE HELP?

have 1998 vw cabrio , other day driving , car began display oil light , few minutes later sort of stalled. had been noticing there had been oil leak in garage continue put oil in every 3 days. when stalled had towed mechanic , found leaking o-ring believe. left him service , when got home saw long trail of oil leading house down street. next day went pick car , drove down street , 3 minutes later light came on again , took back. fixed valve cover gasket, seal believe. said try oil pump , may can done if doesnt work. wrong? need new engine? when drove few minutes drove fine.
