I'm a Canadian buying and exporting a used car through a private sale in CA. Do I have to pay CA sales tax?

flying down make purchase, , driving car home. california title need transferred @ california dmv? or can transfer title when home canada?

notes: shipping car through insured carrier not option since cost way more potential tax savings. 1 person @ board of equalization told me it's ok drive out, legal documents seem imply otherwise. i've spoken individuals did title transfer once got car home , therefore didn't pay ca sales tax, several years ago, don't know if that's still viable option.
