2000 Pontiac Grand Am Batt Light on?

have 2000 pontiac grand am... friend hooked pos. , neg. wires on starter , in turn charged battery when hooking up. swapped alternators , car still runs till battery dies. put new battery in , checked fuses, battery light came on again within 30 seconds of car being on. i'm out of ideas , can't find online. thoughts great.
