guess passat fine minor off roading.. ground clearance isn't best long re not driving through lot of mud or on rocks, you'll fine. subaru makes 2 station wagons. forester , outback. both have 4wd , usally meant little bit of off roading. if cant afford subaru , going doing little mudding intermediate terrain. can buy small lift kit, off road tires, , maybe skid plates.

for getting forest service road trailheads, not real off-roading. how compare subaru?
