there many japanese martial arts:

1) aikido - emphasizes evasion , circular/spiral redirection of attacker's aggressive force throws, pins, , immobilizations primary strategy rather punches , kicks.

2) jujitsu - style encompasses throws, locks, , striking techniques, strong emphasis on throws, locks, , defensive techniques. characterized in-fighting , close work. circular, hard/soft, external style.
training practical heavy emphasis on sparring , mock combat.

3) judo - derived jujutsu. judo practiced on mats , consists of throws (nage-waza), along katame-waza (grappling), includes osaekomi-waza (pins), shime-waza (chokes), , kansetsu-waza (armbars). additional techniques, including atemi-waza (striking) , various joint locks found in judo katas. judo compared wrestling retains unique combat forms. daughter jujutsu these techniques taught in judo classes. judo training emphasizes mental, moral , character development as physical training.

4) karate - okinawan karate styles tend hard , external. in defense tend circular, , in offense linear. okinawan karate styles tend place more emphasis on rigorous physical conditioning japanese styles. japanese styles tend have longer, more stylistic movements , higher commitment. tend linear in movement, offense, , defense.
