Is it common for pilots flying in ultralight aircraft to have emergency parachutes?
in years of ultra light aircraft weight , still major factor in structural failure. gross weight of ultra light climbs stress loads on main spar, aircraft built around. why faa has set weight limit on ultra light aircraft under title 49 part 103. many of newer ultra lights come ballistic recovery system (brs) installed or can ordered option , installed.
because of high failure rate , accident rate of ultra light aircraft (fat ultra light not meeting part 103) faa created new category called experimental e-lsa , s-lsa special light sport aircraft. these aircraft inspected meet standard ultra light aircraft not meet standards safety. not manufactures haven’t been job of making aircraft safe. it’s owners modify them make them on weight , unsafe.
ballistic recovery system has saved many lives due structural failures , more common on new ultra lights aircraft, light sport aircraft , few type certificated (t/c) aircraft such cirrus-22 models , on cessna aircraft.
i saw ultralight faq saying should have emergency parachute while flying, curios if common.
