First motorcycle- looking for a reliable cruiser for commuting?

want spend 2-4k on used bike can learn on. i'm considering yamaha v series, honda shadow, , suzuki boulevard. want reliable , has more classic/retro look.

initially, thought sold on v series because finding 4 or 5 yr. old bikes under 3k. after little more research, found air-cooled, , (some claim) not intended or uncomfortable on long rides. i'm 6'2" , 230 lbs, , don't want "shaq riding pony" put it.

read v series requires lot of maintenance. inconvenience/cost of maintenance negate benefit of v series' low cost when compared honda , others?

gas mileage concern b/c intend use commuter... i'll riding 30 min school, 30 min work, 30 minutes home every day.

advice appreciated.
