Math Question about a Boat!?

lets taking equations..it surely in understanding.

let speed of boat = x;
let speed of stream = y;
distance covered in downstream = 72 miles.
time taken = 3 hrs.
therefore, speed of boat +stream = 72/3=24 miles/hr.

distance covered in upstream=60 miles.
time taken=6 hrs.
speed=60/6=10 miles/hr

in downstream,
x+y=24;

in upstream,
x-y=10;

hence,
solvin both equations, x=17;
, y=17-10=7

speed of boat =17 miles/hr.
speed of stream=7 miles/hr.

hope answer matches.

in additional ques u asked...actually in downstream boat going wid flow of current...so add both speeds of boat current...as in case of upstream...the boat going opposite of current...so speed of boat more...we subtract speed of stream ,..!! hope dat makes clear !!

okay have answer - don't know how it.... (detailed explanation please - basic math on how solve it.)

if boat goes downstream 72 miles in 3 hours , upstream 60 miles in 6 hours, rate of river , rate of boat in still water respectively ___________?
