What are the differences between a 96' Subaru Outback 2.5l and the 97-99 Outback 2.5l?

other answer crap. 2.5 in 96 outback automatic identical 97-99. if 96 manual.... 2.2l engine. bell housing studs inverted, , there bolt on 97+ motors...but still bolt up. crossmembers , such same. wire connections same. fuel supply lines same.....etc. please respond, , tell if have manual or automatic.

i need replace engine, rather handy mechanic keep hearing 96 engine work in 96 subaru , don't understand why. can work around simple differences.
