At what point does the FTC step in if a bag of chips is much lighter than the advertised weight?
correct ftc 1 regulates consumer protection laws. fda deals food safety , health issues.
there not allowance weight variance on bag of chips. if bag of chips advertised 8 ounces must contain 8 ounces of chips. company required have measures in place ensure 8 ounces of chips going bags. generally, through use of electronic scale or using pre-measured volumes. measuring equipment must regularly inspected , maintained. enforced through department of weights , measurements.
mean if bought bag contained 6 ounces company can fined or prosecuted ftc? no. ftc guards against willful or intentional acts of deceit. it's reasonable expect few bags make through process few chips or many chips. acceptable long average net weight of bags producing same amount printed on bag. ftc step in if printing 8 ounces on bags, intentionally producing 6 ounce bags. ftc involved if advertising 8 ounce bags, uses 6 ounces of product , putting 2 ounces of artificial packaging increase weight of bag.
if @ multiple bags of chips, on advertised weight, more not, weight under. ftc allow number of bags pass underweight? cutoff limit this? or not understanding something?
