Can you replace only 2 tires on an all wheel drive vehicle or do all 4 need to be replaced at the same time?

have 2006 forester , had replace 4 tires when had flat not repaired. according subaru:

safe vehicle operation, subaru recommends replacing 4 tires @ same time.
warning: 4 tires must same in terms of manufacturer, brand (tread pattern), construction, degree of wear, speed symbol, load index , size. mixing tires of different types, sizes or degrees of wear can result in damage vehicle's power train. use of different types or sizes of tires can dangerously reduce controllability , braking performance , can lead accident. use radial tires. not use radial tires belted bias tires and/or bias-ply tires. doing can dangerously reduce controllability can result in accident.

if have 30,000 miles on tires, there difference in amount of wear on old tires vs. new tires , risk damaging differential. or that's subaru says, , didn't want risk it.

do tire tread patterns need same?

can have tires brand new on same vehcile tires have had 30k miles put on them?
