tea act, passed parliament in may of 1773, launch final spark revolutionary movement in boston. act not intended raise revenue in american colonies, , in fact imposed no new taxes. designed prop east india company floundering financially , burdened eighteen million pounds of unsold tea. tea shipped directly colonies, , sold @ bargain price. townshend duties still in place, however, , radical leaders in america found reason believe act maneuver buy popular support taxes in force. direct sale of tea, via british agents, have undercut business of local merchants.

colonists in philadelphia , new york turned tea ships britain. in charleston cargo left rot on docks. in boston royal governor stubborn & held ships in port, colonists not allow them unload. cargoes of tea filled harbor, , british ship's crews stalled in boston looking work , finding trouble. situation led boston tea party.
