prior reformation, important form of theatre in england religious drama, mystery , miracle plays performed @ times of years guilds, , told stories bible , lives of saints. after reformation, when form of drama outlawed, secular drama began grow in importance during 16th century.
in england, plays performed in inn yards, during later part of elizabethan era permanent theatres built in london. there seats , boxes better-off spectators, in covered galleries around stage, , poorer spectators stand in pit. pit cost 1 penny. generally, considered unsuitable women attend theatre alone, unescorted women assumed prostitutes. respectable women sat in better seats.
evident theatregoers quite rowdy, comments playwrights of time suggest hissing, clapping , shouts in response action norm. there no interval, hawkers sold food , drink audience, nuts , apples seem have been popular snacks. evident tobacco smoke annoyed playgoers, pipe-smoking common habit end of 16th century both sexes, , people smoked @ theatre.
