LCD monitor on an airline?

have experience checking in 20 or 24 inch lcd monitor on domestic airlines? have original packaging shipping via fedex or ups pretty expensive , wondering if can check in luggage when travel. know if damaged or if airlines take 'some' care in handling fragile stuff. i've seen baggage handlers toss luggage, don't know how handle fragile boxes. thanks.
