2002 Subaru Impreza WRX engine broke down, is it worth replacing?

have been quoted $6000 replace engine block on 2002 subaru impreza wrx @ local subaru dealership. cost of part $2000, labor $4000. i've been told related damages take $2000 repair, bringing total $8000. happened due lack of engine oil. makes sense you?

1) buy used car same money costs repair 1 , rid of this. based on experience, car needs little more care , attention want give. not sure how dispose , salvage remaining value of car. it's not in working condition.

2) have independent mechanic fix rather depend on dealer. seems 2/3 of costs labor related , there independent mechanics job cheaper. unfortunately, live in los angeles, there few shops knowlegeable subaru.
