Trouble changing the valves on my Volkswagen Beetle...?

guessing mean adjusting valves(not changing them). go local library , borrow vw repair manual , can see doing wrong. adjusting valves simple once started...and rotate engine backwards it. @ least trying it. once have done it, remember it. doesn't have exact year. (aircooled motors same) firing order, , clearances.

when change valves on volkswagen beetle, front right first first (#1) , rotate engine 180 degrees #2's , ones on #1 (the exhaust) has come loose. what's going on, , should hire professional?
