What strict requirements my website must meet & what I should do before I submit it to the Search Engines?

seo (search engine optimization) complex subject, dozens of factors , practices required. there dozens of quality web sites outline "best seo practices," , hundreds of other sites helpful less clear or concise. there books , bad books seo, rapid changes in search engines' algorithms , policies, books out-of-date before they're printed.

should either spend lot of time studying seo , website design issues, or hire consultant, before trying create "optimal" site.

it's important recognize there no "strict requirements," , search engines (certainly google, yahoo, msn, ask) index site if has html coding errors, broken images, etc. -- search engines tolerant of "errors."

on past 12+ years, i've created web pages in 10 minutes, no thought seo, unmatched html tags , spelling errors , no meta tags, , still had pages indexed , displayed in favorable positions relevant keywords. i've had sites , pages strategized , optimized site, expending lots of time , effort, , "doing right," without ever appearing in top 100 results relevant search terms.

search engines less tolerant of "trickery" such keyword spamming, cloaking, , dozens of other sleazy tactics which, when detected, can cause site disappear search results. there practices "black hat" or prohibited , evil; there practices folks defend "gray hat" still prohibited , evil (often difference merely likelihood of getting caught).

in fact, number 1 rule seo, in opinion, design web site , pages useful human beings. search engines aren't perfect, on time adapt tricks gradually become better , better @ recognizing pages useful human beings, , excluding pages not useful human beings.

homework. there no "quick , dirty" strategy, , there no guarantees worth anything.
