Rattle noise in gear shift lever for 1995 nissan SE 4x4?

had friend change out clutch , pressure plate on nissan se 4x4, after brought noticed rattling noise in gear shift lever, when remove lever there plastic ball @ base , small spring on base plate. should there spring underneath plastic ball keep rattling? there place find detailed parts description transmission? i've looked in haynes , chilton books doesn't show breakdown of parts.
ps: returning truck friend isn't option since swears replaced had have repaired @ different place after :(
