Married, I must file Canadian and US taxes - joint or individual?

dual canadian/us citizen living in canada, married canadian wife (we've 2 kids). citizen, know have file return 2007. i'm trying figure out whether should file (in canada) jointly wife, or individually since 1 obligated file return - realize have file married.

here relevant background:

- both live , work (main full-time jobs) in canada, have consulting income 2007

- used live in us, , wife has filed returns in past (she had no income 2007 though)

- have child care expenses tax deductible (how divide these if filing individually?)

- individually, wife refund , have large balance owing (which can pay) due consulting income

- i'm assuming that, since i'll have pay high canadian taxes on worldwide income, resulting foreign tax credit eliminate additional taxes
