Why no color on HP 3840 printer?

hi,
have imac using osx 10.3.x. , when bought bought printer @ same time. worked quite awhile.
1 time color ink got low, while, save pennies replaced , used black ink not printing color.
i've reinstalled full color ink cartridge , printer refuses print in color.
i've tried:
1. using printers software clean print heads.
2. use printers software check ink levels. color full , black inkwell 3/4 full.
3. used printers software align printheads.
4. used printers software print out test sheet, printed, not color.
5. looked @ printer control panel , didnt see suggested printer had been set print black & white.

ideas or suggestions before pull hair out?! ;-) - rob
