Why do aircraft still use AM as there primary voice communication?

understand ( havent check years) why aircraft use modulaton on there trancervers comunicate betwen air craft , air ground voice communication. aware use other digitial devices other comunication devices @ 115mghz or close seem fm or other modes more practical. awa fedrally license amatur radio operator ( ham radio) , in years ago forgot.
mode has been around long radio. prone static , distortion fas more other voice mode , freqency used somthing close 115mghz. being longer range or shorter range has nothing having same problems of being able transmit in "line of sight" can be?
know frequency determins if signial distorted obstructions determing if signial refracted or "bonces" earth ionspher allowing bounce around
