Car recommendations wanted - good fuel economy but not too tiny?

1997 toyota tercel seems on way junkyard. it's got on 100k miles , same thing did 2 months it's doing , don't want put more money it.

haven't gone car shopping in on ten years i'm clueless best car me new or used. here's want:

- fuel economy - don't want suv or truck
- space - have 3 show cats , it's been challenging fitting crates , luggage in car me , friend out of town shows
- - i'm not against wagon-style car not drive minivan lol
- prefer automatic live in seattle area lots of hills.
- 4wd nice option. go mountains hiking trails or passes in snow.
- price - under $20k

friend has subaru outback , loves it. thinking might option or similar. have great faith in toyotas.
