How do I get birth/death certificate copies for a genealogy project?

trying apply group, daughters of republic of texas (i had family fought in tx war independence, have been in tx since 1700s, etc). have genealogy work done, need prove validity of family tree , connection either original texas settler or (this easier) person member of group. this, need copies of birth certificates people going myself few generations. problem not on terms father's side of family, , there's no way can grandfather's records (he still alive) stops search pretty low on family tree. how else can go getting records?
