How can you avoid covering up the sketches when painting with acrylic paints on canvas pad?

1st painting..i'm confused..my teacher recommend me acrylic paintings bought liquitex professional acrylic artist color (which expensive compare school ones..) , told me buy gessod paper...so went michaels , asked gessod paper, said buy fredrix canvas pad. bought them...and when start painting, start sketch, , paint background. notice paints covering sketches,and im unable see outlines... how can prevent thata happening????
