if think she's advanced enough stick photography hobby , possibly vocation or avocation, i'd recommend 8mp panasonic dmc-fz18, or it's successor, 10mp dmc-fz28. both of cameras (i have both of them), have perfect 18x optical (not digital!!!) zoom leica lens, wide 28 , 27mm (respectively)zoom @ wide end, , flash powerful enough illuminate mid-to-large size room. both cameras can leave in totally automatic mode, or can go panasonic calls "intlligent auto" mode, you, number of scene modes in between, should suit many different photography situations. hope helps!
