Free image software in between Paint and Photoshop?

hi there :) um, have 2 photo editing programs: paint , photoshop.. paint okay things , quick load it's basic.. photoshop, on other hand, appropriate endeavours, uses fair slice of ram , takes long load can't bothered using it..
looking nice (free) medium between them loads fast yet can bit more paint! if point me in right direction, i'd thrilled!!
