1999 Subaru impreza SRX?

let me preface saying don't have srx trim live, following response may not 100% accurate. however, know turbo motors , know imprezas, i'm i'm not far off.

in cases, it's cheaper , easier swap motors turbo motor. instance, have what's called 2.5rs in states. has sohc 2.5l boxer engine similar in design ej20 that's in srx, except has half liter. complete kit turbocharge motor costs $3000-3500 , lot of down time/money labor , tuning. $2500 buys used wrx front clip japan. includes motor, wiring, , ecu. , if fortunate enough buy exact same year, plug , play. nothing couldn't finish in day buddy or two. swapped car makes more power , gets better fuel mileage if turbo'd stock motor. keep in mind.

when adding turbo non-turbo car, first think have figure out compression. if compression high, let's in 12:1 range, can pretty scrap plans. you'll either have drive around on race gas or you'll have turn boost down around 5-10 psi. either way, you're not going have fun. let's assume have medium compression ratio (11:1) sake of discussion.

can tell, srx wrx without turbo. subaru funny in it's pretty thrifty manufacturer. lot of parts sharing across board. chances if can find wrx of same generation, or better yet same year, take plumbing , bits exhaust ports way exhaust, parts throttle body filter, , replace corresponding parts on srx. , finish, swap ecus. 1 advantage you'll make more power wrx took parts from.

again, sake of discussion, let's there's problem. i'm parts mentioned bolt correctly because that's how subaru works. problem occurs in electronics. while mechanical bits universal, subaru has tendency change ecu, sensors, , wiring. have find , replace every sensor , wiring harness. there few sensors in common, trust me, you're better off being safe sorry. long have vehicle you're harvesting parts from, take can. finding , removing these pieces take better part of day. it'll take rest of day find , replace corresponding parts on srx. sensors have stayed put if you'd swapped entire drivetrain.

if i've lost you, apologize, i've made few assumptions along way: you've worked on cars before, , have dead donor wrx. if don't have donor, you'll have buy parts new, , that's going expensive. buy following aftermarket parts: turbo manifold, ihi turbocharger of choice, down-pipe, intake, front-mount intercooler kit. suggest front mount because can tell, srx doesn't have scoop. you'll have buy piggy-back unit fuel management. or if you've got money, go stand-alone unit. mega-squirt cheap , effective requires degree of knowledge assemble , manipulate. otherwise, can buy assemble , pre-programmed unit megasquirt, aem, hydra, autronic, motec, etc cost anywhere $800 $5000. ballpark total stuff, assuming shopped around: $2600-3000

@ point, hope you've realized sensibility of swapping motor. swap easy. following both cars. undo bolts attached front drive axles , driveshaft. undo bolts attach front subframe , transmission chassis. undo bolts connect catalytic-converter manifold. disconnect ecu , push connector through firewall. connect engine hoist nose of car , lift , little @ time. notice few things ac lines , power-steering lines still connected. disconnect them. ideally, want catch ac refrigerant because toxic , illegal vent atmosphere (certainly in usa), you're average wrench-monkey won't bother. once you've freed drivetrains both cars, switch them, , reconnect in reverse order. takes 2 people , 1 day. i've done sr20 , s13. 6 people perfect, 3 per car.

i've summarized pretty every scenario one: pay professional. figure $6000-8000 parts , labor. drop off, pay, pick week later.
