no, don't have go school, (should) have knowledgeable , skilled in field.

i've known photographers self-taught have been schooled, , on equal ground. 1 better other, depends.

matters know , how perform craft. if terms shutter speed, f-stop, composition, panning, depth of field, rule of thirds, white balance, .... -- if of not terms in 100% familiar, have lot of learning do.

if don't know how manually set shutter speed , aperture, have lot of learning do.

bring up, because these basic, , if not 100% comfortable these terms, need learn more.

photography has many segments, , doing 1 type of photography not mean @ another. portrait photographer instance know how use studio lighting, sports photographer not. great @ shooting football, make suck @ taking portraits , vice-versa.

being said, need know of basic terms.

in digital photography need know photoshop (the full version, not elements) in depth, , possibly lightroom.

being professional photographer broad term. going shoot sports? going weddings? going photojournalist? going work or have business on own?

working different having own business. having own business means lot more being photographer. both considered professional photographers.

if ready professional photographer, should go work one. few shoots in field of interest. them free if have to, opinion doing type of photography want do.

many pros keep craft reading, watching videos, going seminars, entering professional photo contests, , shooting second work admire.

sadly many called "pros" amateurs descent camera, shoot average @ best, don't know heck of lot photography, yet bill out "pro". technically speaking, professional photographer charges work. digital photography has flooded market such sub-par photographers.

if want professional photographer, take seriously, invest time , effort, hone skills, , keep noble profession.
