Nissan Almera problem - help please!!?

nissan almera, 2000 reg, mileage 96k.
6 - 9 months ago started cut out intermittently since runs erratically & cuts out 10 - 20 / day or not @ hours. i've been advised garage apparently use diagnostic equipment can't sure of fault. air filtration requiring replacement part (£200 approx), or servors attaching engine timing belt (£1k approx). surely diagnostic equipment more specific regarding erratic running & cutting out! suggestions??? don't want spend fortune on possibly unnecessary replacement parts! thanks!
