2001 Subaru Legacy Wagon Coolant Check?

have 01 subaru legacy wagon has coolant level in reserve tank below lower line (about 1/4 - 1/2 inch). cant tell how left in there, have make hour drive (50 miles) before can take mechanic, should go thing of coolant , top off myself or safe wait? warning signs if runs out? appreciated since im novice @ this. thanks! :-)
