many historians believe informal deal struck resolve dispute. in return southern acquiescence in hayes' election, republicans agreed withdraw federal troops south, ending reconstruction. deal became known compromise of 1877. compromise pushed african-americans out of power in government; after compromise, african-americans barred voting poll taxes , grandfather clauses.
