Is a skid plate necessary on a Volkswagen New Beetle?

plastic shield goes under front of car (i think it's called skid plate) has come off 2001 vw beetle twice in past 2 years. first time, got stuck in sand , snapped off when pulled out. drove around months without it, , no damage done. dealership replaced (it $600!) , said important, protected underside of car, shouldn't drive around without it, etc.

last month broke off again, , time didn't car stuck in anything. plastic around of bolts cracked , broke off.

uncle mechanic said car fine without long radiator hose doesn't hang below bumper, doesn't.

if mechanic and/or have experience vws, need have part replaced? happen if don't?
