I have a genealogy (family tree) file but can't open it. what software is best to use?

many persons don't have lot of computer or genealogy background, not understand program not "universal". , programs want stay program, make difficult.
known programs allow "output" .ged file. ged files (gedcom) generic , can work in various programs.
if want known free program, 1 @ www.familysearch.org has been around on 20 yrs. can't vouch genopro, either way.
